The five-minute explanation of how ETFs work, why they took over investing, and what makes them different from mutual funds.
Why a 0.9% fee can quietly cost you six figures over an investing lifetime, and how to check what you're paying.
The same index often exists as a US fund and a European (UCITS) fund. Which one you can (and should) buy depends on where you live and pay tax.
The funds on this page are our selection: an experienced, honest attempt to name the ones that matter most in this category. There is no formula: we weigh the factors below, and ultimately make a judgment call. Reasonable people can land differently, and we may miss a fund you love. Read more about how we work →
They track the same S&P 500 index. VOO is US-listed; CSPX is the European (UCITS) equivalent, listed in Ireland, typically the right choice for investors outside the US for tax and access reasons. Use the listings toggle above to see your side.
Almost, in this category: all five funds track the same 500 companies, so cost and tracking precision decide. In categories with looser definitions (dividends, themes), exposure fit matters more than a basis point of fee.
We review every category regularly and update selections when something meaningful changes. In practice, core-category leaders change rarely; a fee cut, a persistent tracking gap, or a better-fitting fund is usually what moves the podium.
Eight short tracks that take you from "what even is an ETF" to running a portfolio you fully understand. Each guide is a 5–8 minute read, written to be the last explanation you need.
The screening and selection of the ETFs showcased on TopETF is, in the end, a subjective judgment. It rests on decades of hands-on ETF experience, and it weighs the things that experience says matter. There is no mechanical formula, and we don't pretend otherwise.
We may have missed funds. We may feature funds that aren't your favorite. We're human, and reasonable people will sometimes disagree with our calls. The point of this site is simpler than perfection: to take a jungle of tens of thousands of listings and distill it into the funds we believe are the main ones in each category — so you can start your own research from a short list instead of an ocean.
TopETF.com is an editorial website providing general information and subjective opinions about exchange-traded funds.
The ETF universe contains tens of thousands of listings across different markets, domiciles, currencies and share classes. TopETF deliberately reduces that universe to a small number of funds that, in our editorial judgment, are particularly relevant or worth knowing within each category.
Terms such as “best,” “top,” “top pick,” “leading” and “hand-picked” are editorial shorthand. They express our subjective judgment under the criteria described below. They do not mean that a fund is objectively superior to every alternative, appropriate for every investor, or guaranteed to perform better than another fund. Our coverage is not comprehensive, and funds that are not shown should not be assumed to be inferior.
There is no mechanical scoring formula or fixed weighting of the criteria. Depending on the category and information available, we may consider:
The importance given to each factor varies by category. Reasonable people may reach different conclusions using the same information. We may have overlooked relevant funds, and our selections may change without notice.
